Um, based on the public information, I think it works roughly like this:

* * *

**Yes — image generation currently works in HuggingChat/Omni.** The simplest route is to leave **Omni** selected and ask for the image directly, for example:

```plaintext
Generate an image of a small red robot reading a book in a watercolor style.
```

This is also consistent with the current [HuggingChat home page](https://huggingface.co/chat/), which includes **“Generate an image.”** as one of its starter prompts.

There is also a useful [public HuggingChat conversation showing the current behavior](https://huggingface.co/chat/conversation/CsZVA3k?leafId=0ebe41df-91af-4770-b08d-fe963fa71d34): the user asks for an image, Omni takes an `agentic` route, and the conversation shows:

```plaintext
Called tool gr1_z_image_turbo_generate
```

So, at least in the currently observable implementation, you do not need to switch the whole conversation to an image model manually. Omni can call an image-generation tool/Space when the request calls for one.

### What about the limits?

For a **Free account** , my best reading of the currently public information is:

> **On the currently observed ZeroGPU image-generation route, the practical limit is probably around 3 generated images per day.**

There is an important caveat to that wording: I do **not** see an official HuggingChat page saying “Free = exactly 3 images/day.”

Rather, the public information currently fits together like this:

- The official [ZeroGPU documentation](https://huggingface.co/docs/hub/spaces-zerogpu) says a Free account gets **5 GPU-minutes/day**.
- In an April 2026 HF Forum discussion about Free ZeroGPU limits, `hysts` explained that there is also a **request-based limit in addition to the time-based quota** , and then stated that [the current request-based limit is three times per day](https://discuss.huggingface.co/t/free-account-zerogpu-quota-issue/175180/9).
- The image generator used in the public HuggingChat example above was Z-Image-Turbo. Its [current Space implementation](https://huggingface.co/spaces/mcp-tools/Z-Image-Turbo/blob/main/app.py) is running on ZeroGPU and produces one image per generation call.

So the inference is roughly:

```plaintext
Free ZeroGPU account
    |
    +-- 5 GPU-min/day
    |
    +-- 3 ZeroGPU runs/day
              |
              +-- current observed image tool: 1 run -> 1 image
                                      |
                                      v
                           roughly 3 images/day
```

I would treat that as the **current effective behavior** , rather than a permanent “3-image HuggingChat plan.” The tool being selected, its implementation, and HF’s quota policy can all change.

One other thing that makes this confusing: **the normal HuggingChat/Omni allowance and the ZeroGPU image-generation allowance are not the same quota.**

> **Why HuggingChat's limits are a little confusing**
>
> There are at least two separate resource/accounting systems involved here.
>
> | Layer | What is limited | Current public information |
> | --- | --- | --- |
> | HuggingChat / Omni model inference | Inference Providers usage | Monthly monetary credits |
> | ZeroGPU image-generation tool | GPU time | Free: 5 GPU-min/day |
> | Free ZeroGPU additionally | Number of runs | 3 runs/day, according to the HF Forum answer above |
>
> The first line is easy to confuse with the other two.
>
> When HuggingChat Omni was introduced, HF described it as a router over models served through [Hugging Face Inference Providers](https://huggingface.co/spaces/huggingchat/chat-ui/discussions/764). Omni examines the request and chooses a route/model rather than necessarily using the same model for every message.
>
> The current [Inference Providers pricing documentation](https://huggingface.co/docs/inference-providers/pricing) lists the included monthly credits as:
>
> | Account | Included Inference Providers credits |
> | --- | --- |
> | Free | $0.10/month, subject to change |
> | PRO | $2.00/month |
> | Team / Enterprise | $2.00 per seat |
>
> Those are **monetary inference credits** , not a fixed “N messages per day” allowance.
>
> That distinction matters because different routed models/providers can have different costs, and request size also matters. So two HuggingChat messages are not necessarily equivalent in cost.
>
> By contrast, ZeroGPU has its own usage system. The current [ZeroGPU documentation](https://huggingface.co/docs/hub/spaces-zerogpu) lists:
>
> | Account | Included daily ZeroGPU quota |
> | --- | --- |
> | Unauthenticated | 2 min |
> | Free | 5 min |
> | PRO | 40 min |
> | Team | 40 min |
> | Enterprise | 60 min |
>
> The docs also say that this included ZeroGPU quota resets **exactly 24 hours after your first GPU usage** — it is not simply a midnight/calendar-day reset.
>
> So if you see people discussing “HuggingChat limits,” it is worth checking which limit they mean:
>
> ```plaintext
> normal Omni/model inference
> -> Inference Providers credits
>
> image-generation Space execution
> -> ZeroGPU quota / ZeroGPU run limit
>
> ```
>
> There have already been [Forum discussions where these two systems were confused](https://discuss.huggingface.co/t/problem-with-hugging-chat/178021), which is understandable because both can ultimately look like “HuggingChat stopped letting me do something.”

>
> This also matches HF’s general MCP architecture. The official [Spaces as MCP servers documentation](https://huggingface.co/docs/hub/spaces-mcp-servers) explains that compatible Spaces can be exposed as tools, and specifically notes that when a **ZeroGPU Space** is called as a tool, **the caller’s ZeroGPU quota is used**.
>
> The currently observed Z-Image-Turbo Space is a concrete example. Its [source](https://huggingface.co/spaces/mcp-tools/Z-Image-Turbo/blob/main/app.py) currently has a GPU-decorated generation function:
>

> @spaces.GPU
> def generate(...):

>
> I would not conclude from this that **Z-Image-Turbo is permanently “the HuggingChat image model.”** It is better viewed as one currently observable example of the image-tool route. HF can change the available tools or routing later.

>
> ### If the tool runs but the image itself does not appear

> That is a different branch again: generation, result transport, and browser rendering are separate steps.
>
> There has, for example, been a [chat-ui issue involving generated HuggingChat images not displaying correctly in Safari](https://github.com/huggingface/chat-ui/issues/2131). That does **not** mean Safari is the cause of every missing image; it is just a useful example showing why “I cannot see the image” and “the image generator failed” should not automatically be treated as identical observations.
>
> ### If no tool is called at all
>
> I would first retry with **Omni** and an explicit generation request such as:
>
> ```plaintext
> Generate an image of ...

> rather than trying to manually force tool support.
>
> For hosted HuggingChat specifically, a [May 2026 chat-ui change](https://github.com/huggingface/chat-ui/pull/2251) made the router/provider the source of truth for tool-calling and multimodal capabilities; those capability toggles are read-only on HuggingChat. Self-hosted chat-ui is different.
>
> So older advice saying “go into the model settings and manually enable Tool Calling” may no longer be appropriate for the current hosted HuggingChat.

> **Why some older answers may say HuggingChat cannot generate images**
>
> There is also a historical reason this is difficult to search.
>
> When the rebuilt **HuggingChat Omni** was introduced in October 2025, users in the [Omni announcement discussion](https://huggingface.co/spaces/huggingchat/chat-ui/discussions/764) were reporting several features from the previous HuggingChat as missing, including image generation.
>
> The current situation is clearly different:
>
> - the current [HuggingChat home page](https://huggingface.co/chat/) explicitly offers **“Generate an image.”** ;
> - and there is a current/public HuggingChat conversation showing an actual image-generation tool call.
>
> So if you find an older post or article saying that the Omni version cannot generate images, check its date. It may describe the initial Omni relaunch rather than the current service.

### Short version

- **How:** leave **Omni** selected and simply ask it to generate an image.
- **Free image limit:** with the currently observable ZeroGPU route, **roughly 3 images/day** is a reasonable estimate, because Free currently has a reported **3 ZeroGPU runs/day** cap and the observed generator returns one image per run.
- **But:** that is an _effective current limit_, not an official permanent “3 images/day” HuggingChat specification.
- **Also:** normal HuggingChat/Omni inference uses **Inference Providers monthly credits** , which are separate from the ZeroGPU limits used by the image-generation tool.
